CLASSIC
This remarkable history play is a jewel in the crown of the Shakespeare canon. Young Prince Hal has been crowned King of England, and remembering his dying father’s advice, subdues domestic rebellion by turning his country’s thoughts to foreign wars. After a successful siege of the French stronghold, Harfleur, the outnumbered and sickly British army, marches on to Agincourt where they face certain death. Henry rouses his troops and their ultimate victory is sealed when France negotiates a peace settlement by offering his daughter’s hand to young Henry. Katherine, who speaks no English, and Henry, who speaks even less French, find themselves in love at first sight. The play ends with a powerful nation and a powerful union-and a chilling reminder of how it will all be dissolved.
