Position Summary
- The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is seeking a skilled Scenic Carpenter to join its technical team. A successful candidate will have carpentry, construction and welding skills. Under the direct supervision of the Technical Director, this person serves as carpenter, fabricator, rigger and welder, assisting in mounting all sets on stage and making them operational.
Essential Functions:
- Construct and mount stage scenery for all productions and special Civic projects.
- Under the supervision of the Technical Director, maintain sets throughout the run, striking and storing scenery and equipment when a show closes.
- Implement and maintain safety standards with regard to work in the scene shops, stage and storage areas.
- Maintain good and safe day-to-day working conditions in the shop and other work areas and the general appearance of those areas.
- Assist with the supervision of volunteers who are assigned to scene shop work.
- Participate in shop and equipment maintenance, material purchasing and the stocking of supplies.
- Assist in other areas of technical production such as painting, electrical, props and design, and at times instruct and work in these areas with volunteers who participate in shop activities.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
- Experience working as carpenter on stage and in a scene shop
- Willingness to adapt to a very flexible work schedule.
- Welding proficiency is required.
- Post-secondary technical theater training is desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to carry up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work from ladders.
- Ability to work from a kneeling position on the floor
- The physical ability to travel between the various CIVIC building locations is required.
