Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Resident Lighting and Sound Designers, the Master Electrician is responsible for the installation, care, operation, and maintenance of all lighting, sound, and special effects equipment. In addition, the Master Electrician supervises crews operating the lighting, sound, and special effects equipment.
Essential Functions:
- Under the supervision of the Resident Lighting Designer, installs the light plot, including hanging and circuiting the lighting units according to the plot for all productions and special events
- Complete lighting, sound, and special effects tasks per design need
- Ensures that all equipment is organized and regularly maintained, is in good working order, and ready for use
- Supervises interns and volunteer crews, including youth, to ensure that the equipment is properly installed and that users are trained in the safe operation of the equipment during the production run
- Safely installs lighting, sound, and special effects equipment
- Completes show, inventory, and department paperwork as necessary
- Assists with maintaining performance spaces through troubleshooting, maintenance, cleaning and assisting with load-ins and strikes
- Problem solves technical issues related to production lighting, sound, electrical loads, space, and system capabilities, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Design, Design Technology or Technical Theatre or equivalent combination of experience and training
- Must be task oriented and able to manage time while working independently with little supervision
- A standout candidate will have knowledge of ETC Consoles, QLab, Digital Cycs, Lightwright, Dante networking, Yamaha QL5, Shure Wireless Microphones, Logic, OBS, communication systems (i.e., Clearcom and Telex) and/or Vectorworks Familiarity working with LED’s, moving lights, atmospherics, lighting consoles; and both analog and digital audio consoles and systems
- Moving light service training and/or experience servicing atmospherics is preferred
- Ability to work with a multi-meter and understand electrical circuits, AC and DC electricity, dimming systems and power supplies
- Experience with special effects is a plus
- Understanding of audio system signal flow and operation
- Familiarity with all relevant electrical codes and comprehensive knowledge of electricity and electronics
- Valid Driver’s License is a plus
Physical Requirements
- Willingness to adapt to a very flexible work schedule, including being available during performances to assist with trouble shooting and/or crew coverage
- Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and bending as well as frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb and work from ladder at a height of at least 55 feet
- The physical ability to travel between the various CIVIC building locations is required.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily performed indoors.
- May be exposed to excessive noise during installations, productions, and rehearsals.
