Director of Education and Outreach

Position Summary

The Director of Education & Outreach for the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre Academy of Theatre Arts will provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality theatre education programming that serves students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. This role is ideal for an educator with a strong academic foundation in arts education and theatre studies who is passionate about curriculum design, measurable learning outcomes, and community engagement through the performing arts.

The Director will be responsible for creating structured, standards-based educational experiences that foster creativity, collaboration, and personal growth while aligning with the Civic’s mission and values. The successful candidate will be a highly organized, detail-oriented self-starter who can work independently, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and maintain excellence with minimal supervision.

Working closely with the Executive Director, guest teaching artists, staff, and community partners, the Director will oversee all aspects of educational programming, outreach initiatives, curriculum planning, instructor support, and program administration.

Essential Functions:

  • Under the supervision of the Executive Director, administer all operations of the Academy of Theatre Arts, including curriculum development, program planning, scheduling, and educational assessment
  • Design and implement lesson plans, classes, camps, and workshops with clearly defined learning objectives and measurable educational outcomes
  • Develop age-appropriate theatre arts curriculum grounded in educational best practices and adaptable to diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Hire, mentor, supervise, and evaluate Guest Teaching Artists to ensure instructional quality and consistency across programs
  • Teach classes and camps as needed, modeling effective instructional strategies and classroom management practices
  • Develop, document, implement, and evaluate educational and outreach programming, including inclusive and affirming learning environments that support cultural, neurological, and identity-based diversity
  • In coordination with the Executive Director, develop and manage program budgets designed to support sustainability and growth
  • Identify, develop and participate in outreach opportunities and collaborative partnerships within the community
  • Develop, with the assistance of the Marketing department, class brochures and other educational and outreach materials
  • In collaboration with the Marketing Department, develop and implement a social media strategy that effectively promotes the Civic’s educational programming
  • Oversee registration and tuition processing for camps, classes and workshops Administer the scholarship program for educational opportunities
  • Coordinate accessibility and inclusion initiatives, including the Civic’s participation in programs such as The Penguin Project
  • Coordinate with the Director of Volunteers, recruit, train and supervise supporting Academy operations and events
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • Degree in Theatre Education, Arts Education, Education, Theatre, or a related field strongly preferred
  • Strong academic background in education, curriculum development, theatre studies, or arts instruction
  • Demonstrated experience creating lesson plans with specific learning outcomes and assessment strategies
  • Knowledge of educational theory, instructional design, and developmentally appropriate teaching practices
  • Broad understanding of theatre arts, including acting, musical theatre, movement, playwriting, theatre history, and performance techniques
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage responsibilities with little or no supervision
  • Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, and administrative responsibilities efficiently and professionally
  • Experience supervising educators, teaching artists, or program staff preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed teaching practices and social-emotional learning strategies preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent sitting and walking
  • The physical ability to travel between the various Civic building locations is required.
