With a heart as big as its belly-laughs, Over the Tavern is the Catholic equivalent of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs. Tender, touching and often outrageously funny, this award-winning play introduces us to 12-year-old Ed Sullivan impersonator Rudy Pazinski as he studies his Baltimore Catechism lessons. Under the watchful eye of his loving, yet dysfunctional family and the omnipresent Sister Mary Clarissa, Rudy comes to realize that there are over 1,300 religions in the world and that it’s probably best to “shop around.” This wonderfully insightful play offers a nostalgic look back to 1959: a time of innocence, youth and discovery. If you grew up with a girl-crazy brother, a self-conscious sister or a stay-at-home mother you’ll love revisiting these heartwarming, humor-filled bygone days.
