Tactless, crass, egotistical junkman Harry Brock has come to a swanky hotel in Washington to make crooked deals with government big-wigs. He has brought with him the charming but dumb ex-chorus girl Billie, whose lack of social graces embarrasses even Harry! In an effort to make Billie more socially acceptable, Harry hires a young, idealistic reporter, Paul Verrall, to smarten her up. Verrall has been investigating political skullduggery and is interested in Brock’s activities. Sparks soon fly between the pair, ignited by her yearning to learn. Billie wisens up to Harry’s activities and fights back to end the corruption. Billie may have buried her smarts beneath layers of satin and showgirl sass, but she is clever beyond perception! A Broadway hit in 1946 that still resonates in today’s political climate and a perfect prescription for those already politically weary in an election year!
RATING:Â BEST ENJOYED BY AGES 13 AND UP
“Garson Kanin’s 1946 comedy might as well be an episode of ‘The Daily Show’ for all its applications to our own topsy-turvy times.”
