A Woman Called Truth

January 18, 2002 — February 2, 2002

Parish Theatre

Given the name Isabella at birth sometime in 1797, Sojourner Truth was the second youngest of twelve siblings. For the first twenty-eight years of her life, she was a slave. This beautiful play traces her remarkable life from the day she is sold away from her family through her struggle to free herself and her son, to her emergence as a popular and respected advocate of abolition and women’s rights. Combining her actual words with authentic slave songs and spirituals of the time, this award-winning play has been honored by the National Endowment for the Arts.
