The Program
The Civic employs five Interns in three disciplines: Costume Design, Lighting/Sound/SFX Design and Scenic Design.
The goal of our Internship Program is to provide a motivating, highly professional atmosphere in which the Intern is challenged with the practical application of prior skills and training, while striving to acquire new skills and experiences. Interns achieve this in the three ways:
- Completing realized designs or constructions, or managing a production in collaboration with a variety of staff, volunteers, and guest artists.
- Assisting the Resident Designers, Technical Directors and Production Manager in any number of capacities as a carpenter, an electrician, a stitcher, a scenic artist, a props master, a sound engineer, etc.
- Assisting with the basic responsibilities of the upkeep and maintenance of the facilities in the Intern's respective area.
Interns work in three spaces: our beautifully renovated, 500-seat proscenium house and our nicely equipped multi-million dollar arena theatre and our 100 seat studio.
Professional Supervision
Under the supervision of our professional staff (29 full and part-time employees), Interns will design or manage up to 6 productions a season in our three venues.
Our roster includes: Managing Director, Business Manager, Marketing/Development Director, Bookkeeper, House Manager, Director of Education, Outreach and Youth Programs, Administrative Assistant, Director of Volunteers, Graphic Designer, Box Office Manager, two Box Office Associates, Production Stage Manager, Lighting/Sound/SFX Designer, Technical Director, Scenic Designer, Props Master/Designer, Costume Designer, Stitcher, Wardrobe Technician, two Scenic Carpenters, two Custodians, and five interns.
Salary and Benefits
The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre Internship Program's salary and benefits package is very competitive. We offer nine and twelve month positions renewable for up to two years. Interns are paid $175 a week, receive free housing owned by the Civic, and are entitled to a medical insurance package.
Each Intern receives their own private room in our housing and shares the common living and eating areas with the other Interns in the program. Utilities, basic phone service and laundry facilities are available at no additional charge to the Intern. There is a nominal deposit required from each Intern who chooses to live in the housing provided by the Civic.
We strive to provide a fair but challenging workload — Interns will be expected to work certain Sundays, evenings and other holidays as established by our season calendar. Being allowed some 'comp time' off when able usually compensates for these additional hours. Civic employees also accrue sick time and paid time off.
